Education and Early Musical Life
Simon was born in Liverpool in 1955 and was educated at Liverpool College. As a child, he learned to play the violin and piano.
In 1971, the Liverpool native entered the Royal Academy of Music, where his tutors included John Carewe. Then, in 1974, Simon won the John Player International Conducting Competition.
While he was still a student, Simon’s talent was spotted by the music agent Martin Campbell-White, who began to help the young musician develop his career.
From 1980 to 1981, Rattle studied at St Anne’s College, Oxford. Ten years later, he was elected an Honorary Fellow of St Anne’s, and in 1999, he was awarded a Doctorate of Music by the University of Oxford.
Career Development
In 1974, Simon Rattle became the assistant conductor of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra. A year later, at the age of 20, he joined the music staff at Glyndebourne. Since then, he has conducted over 200 performances of 13 different operas there.
By 1977, Simon was the assistant conductor of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic. Three years later, he became the Principal Conductor and Artistic Adviser of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra (CBSO), and in 1990, its Music Director. During his time in Birmingham, Simon Rattle elevated not only his own profile but that of the entire orchestra to international status.
The conductor worked on various groundbreaking projects with the orchestra, one of which was the acclaimed “Towards the Millennium” series of concerts featuring music from the 20th century. Conducting in North America and Beyond
In 1976, the conductor made his North American debut, conducting the London Schools Symphony Orchestra at the Hollywood Bowl. By 1979, he was conducting the Los Angeles Philharmonic for the first time. Rattle has also conducted the Cleveland Orchestra, as well as orchestras in Chicago, San Francisco, Toronto, and Boston.
